Sonoma County

Sonoma County sits on the edge of the populous San Francisco Bay area, yet its coastline maintains a rural character and scenic beauty. The visitor can sample historic sites, small villages, picturesque coves and rocky bluffs. For hikers, the Coastal Trail here can be followed on trails and beaches for about 60% of the 64 miles of coastline at Salt Point, Fort Ross and Sonoma Coast State Parks and Stillwater and Doran County Parks. The remainder of the route follows the highway shoulder past private ranches and rural developments such as Sea Ranch and Timber Cove. [Richard Nichols]
