Santa Barbara Western County

The Santa Barbara County coastline is remarkable for the astounding bend the north/south tending coast takes at Point Arguello and Point Conception, running due east for the remaining coastline. North of the points, the shore faces west and takes the wind and fog; around the bend all is south facing warmth. The remote and wild Guadalupe Dunes and Point Sal define the northern most coast ? all available to explore and enjoy. Unfortunately, except for two county parks at Ocean Beach and Jalama, the rest of the coast all the way to Gaviota State Park is closed to the public. Vandenberg Air Force Base and the private Bixby and Hollister Ranches have kept the public at bay for years, creating a 50-mile detour in the CCT. [Richard Nichols]
