Monterey Southern County

Past Point Lobos State Reserve and the small town of Carmel Highlands, the Coastal Trail enters the rough terrain of the ?Big Sur?, where high rocky cliffs fall directly to the ocean below. The trail, by necessity, follows State Highway One or secondary roads ? the Old Coast Road from Bixby Bridge to Andrew Molera State Park and the Coast Ridge Road from the Ventana Inn area to Kirk Creek Campground. Respite from road walking is given to CCT hikers by the Cruikshank and Buckeye trails. Developed originally by homesteaders, these rise through chaparral to mixed oak- and bay-woodlands high up on the Santa Lucia Mountain ridges from which hikers can see the flat terraces of San Luis Obispo County through the southern haze.
